The method according to the invention comprises the following steps: determining (100) a predefined operating state (II) of the on-board power supply; measuring (200) a voltage of the electrochemical energy storage means (1) during the predefined operating state (II); and determining (300) the characteristic variable of the electrochemical energy storage means (1) on the basis of the determined voltage and a reference value associated with the predefined operating state (II), said predefined operating state (II) beginning after an access function is activated, preferably however before a starting process (IV) of an internal combustion engine (4) of the means of transportation (10) is completed.
