The present invention relates to an aircraft (500) having two adjacent frames or ribs (202, 204) and a skin (203), which is attached to the two adjacent frames or ribs. Moreover, a portion (205) of the skin is located between the two adjacent frames or ribs and comprises a first crack retarding region (214) and a second crack retarding region (215) that are separate from each other. Said crack retarding regions are induced by Laser Shock Peening and comprise compressive residual stresses (306, 308, 326). In this way, the propagation of residual stresses in the aircraft skin can be slowed down. Moreover, the present invention relates to the use of Laser Shock Peening to reduce the crack growth in the aircraft skin as well as to a method for reducing the crack growth on a skin of an aircraft.
