A method of controlling aircraft arrivals at a merging waypoint is described. The method comprises defining a tie waypoint at a first distance D OPD from the merging waypoint. A first parameter set of flight instructions for aircraft arriving at the tie waypoint is then generated. The first parameter set includes an aircraft speed instruction for a target separation between a first aircraft arriving at the merging waypoint, and a second aircraft arriving at the merging waypoint. A diversionary flight path is also defined, at a distance D PM from the merging waypoint, wherein D PM < D OPD . A second parameter set of flight instructions is then generated for aircraft arriving at the diversionary flight path, the second parameter set instructing the first aircraft to follow at least a part of the said diversionary flight path before the aircraft flies to the merging waypoint, when it is determined that the expected arrival of the first and second aircraft at the merging waypoint will have a separation that is shorter than a threshold separation. Where the aircraft flies at least a part way along the diversionary flight path, the total flight path thus traversed is increased, thus allowing the first and second aircraft to be spatially separated at the merging waypoint.
