The invention relates to an evaluation arrangement (A) for a device which detects the occupied or free state of a track section (G) on the basis of a receiver signal received by means of the running rails (F) of said track section (G). In order to allow the occupied or free state of the track section (G) to be detected with a particularly high degree of reliability, the claimed evaluation arrangement (A) is designed to determine at least one characteristic variable for a rate of change of the amplitude (UE) of the receiver signal, and to evaluate, on the basis of said at least one characteristic variable for the rate of change of the amplitude (UE) of the receiver signal, a state of electrical insulation of the track section (G) from a track section that is adjacent thereto. The invention also relates to a method for operating a device for detecting the occupied or free state of a track section (G).
