The method involves generating a diagnostic signal (Idiag) in form of a diagnostic flow, which corresponds to a sum of diagnostic current from individual streams. The lamps (02-06) of light (01) are provided with failure detection unit (11) for light sources (10) of each lamp. The sum of any combination of individual diagnosis streams having a current strength of sum diagnostic signal failure detection is associated with such a level that a clear conclusion for fulfillment of currently required lighting functions of light is provided for lamps which are in good and bad conditions. An independent claim is included for motor vehicle lamp.
