The method involves directing an illumination beam (34) onto a rotor surface, and detecting light intensities of reflected components (36) of the illumination beam. One of the light intensities of light is re-impinged from a rotor blade (16), and the other light intensity of the light is not re-impinged from the rotor blade. A risk of icing is determined based on the detected light intensities. The illumination beam is directed toward a region (38) of a rotor disk, which is less than quarters of rotor diameter. An independent claim is also included for a wind energy plant.
