This disclosure is directed to a method for assembling an aircraft fuselage (400, 500), comprising: providing (502) a mid-fuselage section (404, 414, 424) having a first end and a second end; providing (504) a boron reinforced keel (400, 410, 420); securing (506) the boron reinforced keel (400, 410, 420) to the mid-fuselage section (404, 414, 424, 502) such that a first portion of the boron reinforced keel (400, 410, 420) extends beyond the mid-fuselage section (404) first end; providing (510) a second fuselage section; securing (512) the first portion of the boron reinforced keel (400, 410, 420) to the second fuselage section; and splicing the second fuselage section to the mid-fuselage section (404, 414, 424, 502).
