The method of adjusting a basic setting of a headlight (20) of a motor vehicle, comprises detecting a position of a light-dark boundary on a measuring surface arranged before the motor vehicle during a first measurement, pivoting a light bundle (58) to a predetermined pivot angle in a direction perpendicular to the detected light-dark boundary, detecting a position of the light-dark boundary on the measuring surface during a further measurement, and determining a correction angle for adjusting the basic setting result from the measurements and other known parameter. The method of adjusting a basic setting of a headlight (20) of a motor vehicle, comprises detecting a position of a light-dark boundary on a measuring surface arranged before the motor vehicle during a first measurement, pivoting a light bundle (58) to a predetermined pivot angle in a direction perpendicular to the detected light-dark boundary, detecting a position of the light-dark boundary on the measuring surface during a further measurement, determining a correction angle for adjusting the basic setting result from the measurements and other known parameter, determining angles on the basis of positions detected during the measurements of the light-dark boundary on the measuring surface, recording a vertical light-dark boundary by an image sensing device (16), adjusting a horizontal basic setting of the headlight, and optionally providing a distance of the measuring surface from the light source of the headlight. The headlight comprises a light source for emitting light and produces the light bundle having the light-dark boundary. The correction angle is calculated by a trigonometric formula. The parameters comprise the predetermined pivot angle, component in X-, Y-, and/or Z-direction of a distance between the image sensing device (16) of the motor vehicle and the light source of the headlight. On the one hand, the angles extend itself between longitudinal axes of the image sensing device of the motor vehicle and on the other hand, the angles produce connecting lines of the image sensing device to the detected positions of the light-dark boundary. The measuring surface is arranged either vertically or horizontally and parallel to a motor vehicle longitudinal axis. An independent claim is included for a device for adjusting a basic setting of a headlight of a motor vehicle.
