Method and system for monitoring the lining clearance of a disc brake or drum brake (10) which is provided with one or more brake linings (11a, 11b) and which is applied by pneumatic or hydraulic brake pressure imparted by a brake cylinder (12). The relationship between the stroke of the brake cylinder, or of some portion of a brake mechanism (16), and the brake pressure of the brake cylinder, is determined at the time of a braking operation on the basis of measured values representing said stroke and measured values representing said brake pressure. The position where thebrake linings under the action of the brake cylinder come into initial contact with the brake disc or brake drum at the time of the respective braking operation is determined by analysis of the gradient of the relationship between said stroke and said brake pressure, after which a calculation value representing the prevailing lining clearance is determined on the basis of the difference between the measured value of said stroke registered in said determined position and a measured value of said stroke registered at a time when said brake pressure is nil.
