The invention relates to an electrorheological shape retention film. Shape retaining films, methods of use, and end effectors using shape retaining films are presented. In one embodiment, a shape retention film comprises: a porous substrate impregnated with an electro-rheological fluid; a pair of high voltage electrodes located on either side of the porous substrate; and the skin is wrapped around the porous substrate and the pair of high-voltage electrodes.
