The present disclosure provides a system for estimating battery power capacity. One or more controllers charge and discharge the traction battery after startup of the vehicle according to a power limit that is based on a polarization voltage describing an internal state of the traction battery and that is a function of: a polarization voltage present at a last deactivation of the vehicle; and a decay value having a time constant based on a state of charge of the traction battery and a temperature associated with the traction battery.
