It is then checked whether more than one travel trajectory (10, 12) is present within the lane boundary (23). For this purpose, it is determined whether one or more data points (11a, 13a) are present along the rear axle (5) of the motor vehicle (1), which data points each belong to a different travel trajectory (10, 12). Depending on the result of the check, the determined driving lane (22) is approved and a first lane width (S1) is used for the lateral control of the motor vehicle (1), or the determined driving lane (22) is certified and a different second lane width (S2) is used for the lateral control of the motor vehicle (1).
