A control strategy for an electric vehicle battery system is described that combines active cell temperature balancing. In one example, a method includes employing, by a system operatively coupled to at least one processor, a smart cell system to power one or more electrical systems of a vehicle, the smart cell system including a plurality of battery cells. The method further includes controlling, by the system, operation of the battery cells according to a control protocol that causes an increase in the temperature of the subset of battery cells based on the temperature of the subset of battery cells being below a threshold temperature. In one example, a control protocol may include circulating current between a subset of battery cells and/or other battery cells excluded from the subset, actively discharging the subset of battery cells, and redistributing power to other battery cells excluded from the subset, among others.
