The invention provides a system and a method for battery cell degradation detection. Methods and systems are provided for a high voltage multi-array battery for a plug-in vehicle. In one example, a method may include monitoring that a rate of change of a difference in maximum cell voltage deviations of at least one cell array of a high voltage multi-array battery exceeds a predetermined threshold. In response to the rate of change exceeding a predetermined threshold, plug-in charging is aborted and a diagnostic fault code (DTC) is recorded in a memory of the vehicle.
