The invention relates to a method for the rapid de-excitation of a rotor (4) of an externally excited synchronous machine (2) of a motor vehicle (1), the motor vehicle (1) or the synchronous machine (2) comprising an excitation circuit (10) having at least one transistor (11, 12) for controlling the rotor current of the synchronous machine (2),-when the motor vehicle (1) or the synchronous machine (2) is in normal operation, the motor vehicle (1) or the synchronous machine (2) is de-excited by the excitation circuit (10). The at least one transistor (11, 12) is operated in a switching mode, in which the at least one transistor implements an electronic switch,-the at least one transistor (11, 12) is operated in a resistive mode, in which the at least one transistor implements a resistance, during an emergency operation of the motor vehicle (1) or the synchronous machine (2), in which the at least one transistor (11, 12) is operated in the resistive mode, in which the at least one transistor implements a resistance for a rapid de-excitation of the rotor (4), the rotor current is at least partially reduced by means of at least one transistor (11, 12) implementing a resistance.
