The invention relates to a train type recognition system and method.The train type recognition system comprises a first shooting device, a first detection device, a train speed obtaining device, an adjusting device and a recognition device, the first shooting device is arranged on the first side face of a running path of a train, and the first shooting device is configured to shoot images towards the running path; the first detection device is in signal connection with the first shooting device, and the first detection device is configured to detect whether the images shot by the first shooting device comprise at least part of the images of the train or not, and record the arrival or departure time of the train when detecting that the images comprise at least part of the images of the train; the train speed obtaining device obtains the running speed of a train, the adjusting device is in signal connection with the train speed obtaining device and adjusts the line frequency of the first shooting device according to the running speed of the train, and the recognition device is in signal connection with the first shooting device and recognizes the type of the train according to images shot by the first shooting device.
