An elevator drive sheave for use with a coated steel cord includes a metal body and a divider. The metal body has a shallow circumferential groove having a groove depth. The grooves are separated from each other by a divider extending out of the metal body substantially greater than the depth of the grooves. The separator is made of or provided with a low friction cover layer. A coefficient of friction between the separator and the covering layer of the coated steel cord is much lower than a coefficient of friction between the metal body and the covering layer of the steel cord. The metal body may be assembled from discs each having a single groove. And the width of the groove is smaller than the diameter of the coated steel cord, so that the friction force of the coated steel cord can be further influenced. An elevator comprising a coated steel cord extending over a sheave is also claimed.
