The invention relates to a brake system having an electric motor driven master cylinder and an electric secondary power transmission unit. A brake system for actuating a plurality of wheel brakes including a first pair of wheel brakes and a second pair of wheel brakes includes a reservoir and a motor-driven master cylinder operable during a normal non-fail braking mode to generate brake actuation pressure at a first MC output and a second MC output, and a hydraulic actuator for hydraulically actuating the first pair of wheel brakes and the second pair of wheel brakes. The secondary power transmission unit is configured to selectively provide pressurized hydraulic fluid at the first PTU output and the second PTU output, and includes a PTU motor configured to selectively pressurize the hydraulic fluid by transmitting rotational motion to the at least two pump pistons. The secondary power transfer unit is indirectly fluidly connected to the reservoir to selectively draw hydraulic fluid from the reservoir.
