The present disclosure relates to a method performed by a processor for predicting ship movement. The processor creates historical travel data by: receiving historical location data indicative of a historical location of a vessel; marking a stop point indicating a port where the ship stops in the historical position; splitting the historical position data of the ship into a sequence of historical positions between the stop points; and clustering the sequence of historical locations to determine representative sequences, each representative sequence representing one of a plurality of clusters. The processor then predicts future ship movement by receiving a current geographic location of a current travel of the tracked ship; selecting one of the representative sequences closest to the geographic location; and predicting a future movement of the tracked vessel traveling along a selected one of the representative journeys.
