The system may detect signs and symptoms of (edge) track thermal misalignment using on-board locomotive sensors mounted on train end equipment. Once detected, an alarm is issued to prevent potential derailment. The system may also include forward and backward imaging sensors (e.g., cameras, LiDAR sensors, etc.). The system may communicate with a traction locomotive via wireless communication, such as radio, to ensure appropriate air pressure and location. The system may be powered by an on-board battery and/or a pneumatic device. Advantageously, the system can calculate whether any track deviation is significant (e.g., through one or more thresholds). The system may also utilize image processing functions performed by one or more processors to determine centerlines and track spacing.
