The invention relates to a method for measuring a braking distance (LB) and to a braking distance measuring device (30) for carrying out the method in an escalator (1) or a moving walkway. The braking distance measuring device (30) comprises at least one trigger device (45) which can be connected to a controller (14) of the escalator (1) or the moving walkway, a linear measuring scale (31) which can be optically detected, an optical sensor (35) and an acoustic sensor (36). In order to be able to accurately measure the braking distance (LB), the braking process is optically and acoustically recorded as a sequence of images (60) having a graphically displayed audio track (65). According to the invention, the starting point (68) and the end position (69) of the braking operation noise (51) recorded on the audio track (65) can be precisely associated with the images (62, 63) of the sequence of images (60), and the braking distance (LB) is determined by comparing the different positions of the marking (53) with respect to the measuring scale (31) on the basis of the detected images (62, 63).
