The invention relates to capacitor discharge. An inverter system is provided that includes a DC input for connection to a DC power source. The inverter system includes a plurality of transistors that are controllable to convert a DC voltage to an AC voltage. The inverter system also includes a DC link capacitor coupled to a DC input of the inverter system; and a discharge controller configured to cause energy discharge from the DC link capacitor when the DC power supply is disconnected from the inverter system. The discharge controller is configured to cause discharge of energy from the DC link capacitor by turning on at least the first transistor and the second transistor to cause a controlled breakdown of the inverter system. At least one of the first transistor and the second transistor is controlled by the discharge controller to operate in a linear operating region.
