This document describes techniques to implement active steering assistance for vehicle turn and park maneuvers. The primary vehicle may move on the vehicle path and detect a road obstacle (e.g., a curb) having a height relative to the travel surface that is shorter than the height of the vehicle wheels. When it is predicted that a collision will occur between the road obstacle and the host vehicle, a steering correction is determined for changing the vehicle direction on the vehicle path to prevent the collision. A steering assist function is activated when the steering correction is within a safety threshold (e.g., driving at low speed safety). The steering assist function results in an adjustment of the steering control that changes the direction of the vehicle based on the determined steering correction, in time avoiding road obstacles on the driving surface, thereby preventing a predicted collision.
