The invention relates to a motor control system for an electric vehicle, comprising a brushless DC motor (1) having at least three phases. The electronic system for controlling the motor comprises a main power supply device (4) for powering a power half-bridge (2a, 2b, 2c) for powering the phases of the motor and provided with an upper arm equipped with a first electronic switch (21a, 21b, 21c) and a lower arm equipped with a second electronic switch (22a, 22b, 22c). The control system further comprises a programmable computer (3) for controlling the first and second electronic switches by means of an output (3a) for controlling the electronic switches to implement at least a first drive mode and a second freewheeling mode of the motor, the first driving mode is switched and controlled according to the sequence of the switches to create a rotating electric field ensuring rotation of the motor, and the second freewheeling mode is that the electronic switches of the power half-bridge are turned off. The system comprises a safety circuit adapted to generate an emergency braking mode and provided with a third electronic switch (9a, 9b, 9c) in parallel with the second electronic switch (22a, 22b, 22c) for short-circuiting the lower arm of the half-bridge. The third electronic switch is controlled by an additional switching circuit (7) provided with a channel (7a) for detecting a disconnection of the main power supply (4) and/or a control channel (7b) from the programmable computer and adapted to close the third switch to perform the emergency braking. The additional switching circuit is powered by a secondary power supply device (8).
