The subject of the invention is an elevator suspension member monitoring system. Methods and apparatus are provided for monitoring a suspension member that supports an elevator car and experiences a bending cycle when the suspension member facilitates movement of the elevator car between a plurality of door regions. The method and apparatus: determine a number of times an elevator car passes through or stops at each of a plurality of door areas; determining a number of bending cycles experienced by the at least one segment of the suspension member based on a number of times the elevator car passes through or stops at each of the plurality of door regions; and determining a condition of the suspension member based on a relationship between the determined number of bending cycles and at least one predetermined criterion.
