The invention provides a controller-based active discharge circuit for discharging a link capacitor. A traction powertrain of an electrically powered vehicle includes a power electronics module and a controller. A power electronics module, such as in the form of an inverter, is configured to drive a traction motor with power from a traction battery via a DC link capacitor. The controller has an onboard power supply, such as in the form of a supercapacitor. The controller is configured to, in response to detecting an event to discharge the DC link capacitor, control the power electronic module using power from the onboard power supply and control the power electronic module to operate in a manner to discharge the DC link capacitor.
