The present application provides a battery having a rechargeable electrochemical energy storage element. The battery has a housing and a plurality of rechargeable electrochemical energy storage elements disposed therein. The battery comprises a positive electrode and a negative electrode which can be connected out of a shell of the battery. All energy storage elements are connected to a common circuit board and/or are arranged at or in a common battery cell holding frame. The first portions of the energy storage elements are assembled by series and/or parallel connections into a main pack having a first capacity and providing a first voltage. The second part of the energy storage elements is assembled by series and/or parallel connections to form a secondary pack, preferably having a second capacity and providing a second voltage. The main pack has a positive output electrically connected to the positive electrode of the battery and a negative output electrically connected to the negative electrode of the battery. The energy storage elements of the main pack and the energy storage elements of the sub-pack can be connected to each other generally via battery management electronics such that the capacities and/or voltages of the main pack and the sub-pack are summed.
