The invention relates to autonomous engine shutdown and automatic cooling time. The techniques herein will allow for automatic start of a cooling time and autonomous shutdown of the APU immediately if the APU does not provide any power (e.g., pneumatic power, electric power, etc.) to the aircraft after the main engine is started. The APU control unit will not wait for pilot input to initiate a cooling time, which will be initiated automatically. Meanwhile, the control unit also sets the autonomous APU to stop. Then, after the cooling time, the APU will shut down if the pilot does not take any action.
