The present disclosure provides a motorized vehicle having an inverter controlled to heat a traction battery. A system for an electrically powered vehicle, such as a battery electric vehicle (BEV), includes an inverter and a controller. The inverter is configured to drive a traction motor with power from a traction battery, such as a lithium phosphate (LFP) traction battery, according to a configuration of a power switch (e.g., an IBGT or MOSFET) of the inverter. The system also includes a controller configured to control a variable gate driver resistance of the power switch in a closed loop manner to achieve a target temperature of the inverter. The system may also include a heating coolant loop for transferring heat generated by the inverter to the traction battery to warm the traction battery. The controller may also be configured to further control a switching frequency of the power switch in a closed loop manner to achieve the target temperature of the inverter.
