The invention relates to a traffic optimization method and system for road traffic, and the method comprises the steps: carrying out the detection and recognition of the traffic condition of a traffic intersection, and obtaining the detection information of the intersection, and the detection information of the intersection comprises the information of pedestrians crossing the street and the information of passing vehicles; based on the street-crossing pedestrian information and the passing vehicle information, the trend of pedestrian street crossing and vehicle passing is dynamically predicted, and a traffic trend prediction result is obtained; and based on the traffic trend prediction result, a traffic signal control scheme is generated, and the traffic signal control scheme is used for directing traffic at the traffic intersection. According to the invention, a traffic signal control scheme giving consideration to pedestrian crossing and vehicle passing is realized, accidents caused by the fact that a driver fails to avoid pedestrians in time due to right vehicle shielding can be effectively avoided, pedestrian crossing safety is improved, pedestrian crossing and vehicle passing efficiency is optimized, efficient utilization of road traffic resources is ensured, and the traffic signal control method is suitable for popularization and application. The problem of how to improve safety and passing efficiency in road traffic is solved.
