The method comprises the following steps: after an STP system is started, judging whether an inertial sensor fails or not; carrying out weighting according to multiple parameters to obtain a cost function when the parameters are valid; determining that the shunting positioning scheme is switched to a GNSS/SINS (Global Navigation Satellite System/Strapdown Inertial Navigation System) combined positioning scheme or a map matching/SINS combined positioning scheme according to a comparison result of the cost function and a cost threshold value; locomotive positioning is carried out according to the shunting positioning scheme to obtain locomotive positioning information; and according to the locomotive positioning information, shunting train set positioning is synchronously carried out to realize whole vehicle positioning. According to the method, the current positioning environment is judged, shunting positioning schemes are automatically switched, the whole vehicle positioning process covering multiple scenes of wireless shunting locomotive safety protection is constructed, high-quality positioning of the whole vehicle is achieved through the two shunting positioning schemes, and therefore continuous, stable and accurate positioning under the station yard shunting operation safety protection requirement is achieved.
