For automatic driving, the invention proposes an electro-hydraulic multi-circuit external brake system (1) having, for each brake circuit (I, II), a piston-cylinder unit (9) via which the brake circuits (I, II) are coupled to a common external brake pressure generator (3). In the event of a failure of the external brake pressure generator (3), the external brake system (1) can be actuated by means of a hydraulic pump (18) of a slip control device (14) of the vehicle brake system (1).
