A vehicle includes a powertrain having a prime mover, a transmission having a number of gears, and a base brake. The speed of the vehicle along a downhill section is automatically controlled toward a target speed by prioritizing the use of engine braking force and the transmission downshift over the application of a base brake of the vehicle.
