A rail (13) for supporting a pulley (14) of a gantry crane (10), having rail ends (18, 19) on opposite sides of a joint (17), the rail sections (18, 19) being provided with end regions (20) of an improved rail head profile which guides the wheels of the pulley (14) across ridges (23), the ridge gradually rises to a height (L1) above the rail head (27) when approaching the joint (17). The ridge (23) then brings the wheel into the joint (17), where a transition from one track section to the next takes place on a reinforcement region. The bearing apex (A) of the ridge is arranged at a position away from the side edge of the rail (13) and away from the end of each protruding portion (21). The track extends the service life of the crane track by reducing the wear rate of the high stress area of the joint (17) and adding additional wear resistant material over the track at the joint.
