The invention relates to a circuit and a method for performing alternating heating and capacitive measurement modes by means of a common heating wire (2), comprising the following steps: performing a heating mode during which a pair of first switching elements (3a, 3b) are switched on by a control circuit (6a, 6b, 13), and a pair of second switching elements (3a, 3b) are switched on by a control circuit (6a, 6b, 13); the first switching elements (3a, 3b) and a pair of second switching elements (4a, 4b) are in a conducting state, the first switching elements (3a, 3b) and the second switching elements (4a, 4b) are connected in series with the heating wire (2), and the heating wire (2) is conductively connected to one of two different heating potentials (VH +, VH-) via the first switching elements (3a, 3b) and the second switching elements (4a, 4b) connected to the first switching elements (3a, 3b) via conductor segments (5a, 5b), respectively, a heating current is applied to the heating wire (2); triggering a transition from a heating mode of operation of the first switching element (3a, 3b) and the second switching element (4a, 4b) to a measuring mode of operation by means of the control circuit (6a, 6b) in such a way that the two connections of the heating wire (2) to the two different heating potentials (VH +, VH-), which are electrically conductive in the heating mode of operation, are each interrupted a plurality of times in the measuring mode of operation; a measurement mode of operation is carried out, in which a measurement capacitance of the heating wire (2) for a reference potential (16) is determined by applying an alternating voltage (VAC) of an alternating voltage source (12) to the heating wire (2) by a detection circuit (9); during the time of the measurement mode of operation, a test phase is carried out during which a test circuit (14, 15) is used, which comprises at least one third switching element (14) and a test impedance (15), and which is switched by the control circuit (6a, 6b, 13) such that the test impedance (15) joins the measurement capacitance, and detecting, by means of the detection circuit (9), at least an associated change in the measurement capacitance and/or a total impedance from the measurement capacitance and the test impedance (15).
