A guardrail apparatus, an elevator car, and a method of preventing falling into an elevator shaft. The guardrail device (13) comprises a first protective element (Pe1) and a second protective element (Pe2), both located below a sill (14) of the elevator car (3). The elements together form a flexurally rigid sleeve structure that is movable relative to the elevator car. The first protective element may lift a second protective element closer to the elevator car. When the second protection element is lifted, the upper part of the second protection element moves towards the space below the elevator car bottom (18) in the transverse direction. The first protection element moves only in the vertical direction.
