A system and method for avoiding unintended acceleration is provided and includes a first integrated circuit based electronic controller configured to receive acceleration and braking requests and provide a control output via a data link dedicated to control a prime mover system of a vehicle; a triaxial accelerometer configured to provide an acceleration output indicative of acceleration of the accelerometer relative to three dimensions; and a second integrated circuit-based electronic controller operating independently of the first integrated circuit-based controller, the second integrated circuit-based electronic controller configured to receive acceleration and braking requests, receive an acceleration output of the triaxial accelerometer, and be operably coupled with the data link. A second integrated circuit-based electronic controller is configured to determine an unexpected acceleration event in response to acceleration and braking requests and an acceleration output of the triaxial accelerometer.
