The invention provides a DC fast charge converter for a vehicle traction battery. A vehicle power system has: a power converter including a pair of switches and a pair of diodes all connected in series; an inverter; a traction battery including a pair of battery modules connected in series, the pair of battery modules connected in series being commonly electrically connected between the power converter and the inverter and being connected in parallel with the power converter and the inverter; and a controller. The controller complementarily opens and closes the switch to alternately charge the battery module with direct current such that a magnitude of current input to the power converter remains constant.
