A diffuser element for an underside of a vehicle comprises, in order from front to back in a longitudinal vertical cross-section: a smooth and monotonically rising first panel, a second panel, and a gap between the first and second panels, in which an edge of the second panel adjacent to the gap comprises a substantially flat planar portion, the planar portion is offset from and below a plane of the first panel in front of the gap. Gaps of this type in the diffuser serve to expel the boundary layer from the gas flow through the diffuser, thereby enhancing its effectiveness and improving the downforce resulting therefrom. The gap is preferably located in the front half of the diffuser and may form an inlet to the duct leading to the vehicle rear outlet.
