An axle assembly includes a carrier housing defining a receiving aperture that receives a hollow axle tube. An axle shaft extends through the axle tube to an outboard end and is secured to a hub that extends around the axle tube and is rotatable relative to the axle tube. The axle tube is attached within the receiving aperture by an interference fit. The receiving aperture is defined by an inner ring of the dual ring structure. A plurality of ribs extend radially between the inner ring and the outer ring of the dual ring structure. The dual ring structure has a reduced stress concentration relative to the single ring structure, the stress concentration being caused by a bending load generated by an upward reaction force induced at the wheel end in response to a downward chassis load on the axle tube. The carrier housing and the axle tube are made of different materials and are secured together without the use of welding.
