An electrical regenerative braking system is provided for capturing kinetic energy as electrical potential energy during vehicle braking (also referred to as a braking event). The electrical regenerative braking system captures kinetic energy from an axle of the vehicle using an electric motor to produce electrical potential energy from the kinetic energy. The generated potential energy is supplied to an energy store, the resistance of which increases as the stored potential energy increases. The potential energy stored in the energy store is used to charge the battery. An electric regenerative braking system uses a controller having a variable resistor to control the braking torque of an electric motor. That is, the controller modulates the resistance of the variable resistor based on the resistance of the energy storage such that the resistance of the variable resistor decreases as the resistance of the energy storage increases.
