Charging and/or discharging of a set of replaceable battery modules in a battery system is automatically performed using a set of charging and/or discharging control switches linked in a sequential charging and/or discharging control chain. Charging and discharging of the set of battery modules may be done sequentially or in parallel, and hardware-based with minimal software/firmware participation. The system is scalable and automatically reconfigurable for use with infrastructure and/or electric vehicles. The replaceable battery modules may be positioned in the battery compartment or abutted together in the battery system.
