The invention relates to a vehicle tailgate assembly. A vehicle tailgate assembly is disclosed that includes a sill flap and a tailgate, where the sill flap has a roller that contacts the tailgate when the sill flap and tailgate are opened or closed. Thus, the sill flap maintains rolling contact with the tailgate during opening and closing operations. In embodiments of the present disclosure, the tailboard opens to leave a gap between an edge of the vehicle bed and an edge of the tailboard, and the sill flap pivots into the gap. Upon pivoting into the open position, the sill flap roller rotatably contacts the tailgate such that the sill flap remains rolling contact with the tailgate rather than frictional contact therewith. This prevents damage to the sill flap and the tailgate when opened and closed.
