A method for charging an electric vehicle is provided. Aspects include configuring switchable batteries of an electrified vehicle into a fast charge configuration by connecting a first battery pack of switchable batteries to a first charging source and connecting a second battery pack of switchable batteries to a second charging source and obtaining one or more characteristics of the first and second battery packs. Aspects also include identifying the first battery pack as a master battery pack and the second battery pack as a slave battery pack based on determining that the first battery pack has a lower voltage level than the second battery pack. Aspects also include adjusting a duty cycle of a switchable active load connected in parallel with the slave battery pack based on one or more characteristics of the first battery pack and the second battery pack.
