A method for calibrating a user input device (1) comprises a first calibration step in which a first relationship between a change in an actuation force applied on a touch-sensitive surface (3) and a change in a sensor signal from a distance sensor (6) is determined. After the first calibration step, the user input device (1) is installed in the motor vehicle. In a subsequent second calibration step, the first relationship is corrected on the basis of the actual value of the sensor signal.
