The automatic positioning system includes a first tire sensor unit that measures a footprint length of a first tire. The second tire sensor unit measures a footprint length of the second tire. A vehicle state determination module receives the measured print length and determines when the vehicle is in a stationary or cruising state. The average calculation module receives measured print lengths when the vehicle is in a stationary or cruising state and determines a first average print length corresponding to the first sensor unit and a second average print length corresponding to the second sensor unit. A comparison module receives the average print lengths and determines the longest and shortest ones of the average print lengths. A position determination module generates a position determination of the first sensor unit and the second sensor unit based on the longest and shortest average print length.
