A suspension system and related control method for deactivating passive pitch stiffness in the suspension system by keeping an electromechanical cushion valve in a manifold assembly of the suspension system open, thereby improving comfort. The manifold cushion valve will remain open to deactivate the passive pitch stiffness of the suspension system if the vehicle travels on a rugged road, or the vehicle is approaching a discontinuous road event such as a pit or deceleration strip. The deactivation of the passive pitch stiffness of the suspension system is determined from road classification information, saved road events, and/or real-time vehicle data from on-board sensors. Thus, the suspension system reduces the pitch angle during a pitch event caused by an inertial force input by the driver; in a pitch event caused by a road input, the suspension system deactivates the pitch stiffness.
