The present disclosure provides a traction battery controller that detects battery capacity using active charge control. A method for detecting a capacity of a battery, such as a traction battery of an electrically powered vehicle, includes varying a charging current provided to the battery, and measuring a terminal voltage of the battery as the charging current varies. An estimator is driven with the terminal voltage to estimate a state of charge (SOC) of the battery, the estimator utilizing voltage feedback to provide state and parameter estimates of the battery based on a model of the battery. The capacity of the battery may be detected based in part on the SOC.
