The invention relates to a method for starting (9) an active discharge step (95) of an electrical system, the starting method (9) being autonomously implemented by a control unit of a voltage converter controlling the charge of a high-voltage battery of a motor vehicle. To this end, the voltage converter control unit autonomously tests a plurality of conditions on the high-voltage battery, the communication network and the in-vehicle network in order to initiate an active discharge step (95) if at least one condition is verified.
