The invention relates to a method (1) for detecting and locating obstacles/elements on a road surface, comprising: acquiring (11) wheel speed values relating to wheels of a motor vehicle driven on a road, and geographic reference data associated with the wheel speed values and indicative of respective positions of the motor vehicle; an entry time when a wheel encounters an obstacle/element and an exit time when the wheel crosses the obstacle/element are identified. And calculating a normalized peak-to-peak value related to the obstacle/element based on a maximum value and a minimum value of the acquired wheel speed values related to collision related moments included between the entry moment and the exit moment, and an average value of the acquired wheel speed values related to a first collision-free moment immediately before the entry moment, to detect (12) obstacles/elements present on the road based on the acquired wheel speed values; determining (13) a degree of severity associated with the obstacle/element based on the normalized peak-to-peak value; determining (14) the location of the obstacle/element based on acquired geo-reference data associated with one or more of the acquired wheel speed values, the one or more wheel speed values relating to a collision-related moment and/or a first collision-free moment and/or a second collision-free moment immediately after the departure moment; and storing (15) the location of the obstacle/element along with the degree of severity associated with the obstacle/element.
